Jan van Noortwijk Award 2026
Without sharing the knowledge we develop, it will never be put to good use. At HKV and Svašek, we therefore place great value on publishing our expertise. Every year, we recognize the best article published by one of our colleagues in a professional magazine or scientific journal. This award is the Jan van Noortwijk Award, named after our colleague who passed away far too young and who made the art of publishing his hallmark. More information about Jan and the award can be found at: https://janvannoortwijk.hkv.nl/.
This year marked the 18th presentation of the award.
During our quarterly meeting on Thursday, 25 June—a particularly hot day—the three nominees each gave a short pitch to present their article:
- Anna Kroon with “Parameter uncertainty in mediumterm coastal morphodynamic modeling” in Scientific Reports
- Hermjan Barneveld with “Extreme river flood exposes latent erosion risk” in Nature.
- Jochem Caspers and Paulina Kindermann with “Storm surge hydrographs and characteristics along the Dutch coast. An analysis from simulation data” in Coastal Engineering.
In the end, our colleagues and students selected Hermjan’s Nature paper as the best article of 2025. Bas Kolen (right in the photo) then had the pleasure of presenting the Jan van Noortwijk Award to the delighted and proud winner.
