The model showed a sand balance in the estuary which, despite having some deviations from reality in the absolute sense, presented trends which are very similar to those observed in the actual Western Scheldt.\r\n\r\nSimulations of the situation in the years 1964 and 2001 showed that relative differences between the simulations match actual differences in the sand balance between those years.\r\n\r\nUsing the tested model, Sva\u0161ek investigated the influence of several human activities, including sand mining and different strategies on fairway maintenance, on the import and export of sand along the Western Scheldt estuary.\r\n\r\nThe figure below shows the sensitivity of the sediment import\/export for various scenarios, relative to the scenario without any human activity.\r\n\r\nCompared to the effects of the investigated dumping strategies the sand mining only showed a small effect on total sand transports.
