Honorable mention for “The Energy Island” at the Energy Landscape of the Future contest
Svašek Hydraulics - together with Qirion, Zeeuwse Milieufederatie, Haver Droeze Consultancy, Energy Indeed and Feddes Olthof landscape architects bv.- became second in the Energy Landscape of the Future contest, with the plan for the construction of an island for energy storage in the mouth of the Western Scheldt.
The Energy Island is addressing one of the biggest challenges in the energy transition, the storage of renewable energy. The essence of this innovative idea is to create a ring-shaped island in the sea as a compact energy storage.
The water within the ring-shaped island is equipped with seawater batteries in which surplus energy is temporarily stored. During charging, seawater is split into acidic and alkaline water volumes that are stored in flexible bags floating in the water.
The ring-shaped island is naturally embedded in the landscape. Function combinations with energy generation by floating solar panels, aquaculture nature and recreation are possible.
