Port of Rotterdam opens major extensionMay 2013
The Port of Rotterdam opened a multi-billion euro extension on May 22nd, with wider and deeper basins to accomodate the world's biggest freight ships. The Maasvlakte 2 project is the largest feat of Dutch maritime engineering in decades and is forecast to only reach full completion in 20 years. The initial stage of the extension has been completed at a cost of 1.55 billion euros, 150 million euros less than planned.
For the realisation of Maasvlakte 2 a total of 240 million cubic metres of sand has been dredged. The development includes a 3.5-kilometre hard seawall built with seven million tonnes of stone and 20,000 concrete blocks to resist the North Sea's relentless onslaught.
Since 2006 Svašek Hydraulics is involved in the design process and construction aspects of Maasvlakte 2.

Svašek Hydraulics develops American East Coast ModelApril 2013
After the successful launch of the European Continental Shelf Model in 2012, Svašek Hydraulics has now developed the American East Coast Model (AECM). The AECM provides high quality tidal data for the Atlantic continental shelf of the United States and Canada, including the Gulf of Saint Lawrence using numerical flow simulation software FINEL2D.
The AECM fits many different purposes. Its water level and current forecasts can serve as input for e.g. ship routing or workability predictions.

Barbara Kéri has been awarded the Emil Mosonyi award for her Master’s Thesis.Februari 2013
Barbara Kéri (Budapest University) has been awarded the Emil Mosonyi award for her Master’s Thesis: “The effect of navigation on the flow in a river trained with groynes”. The thesis, for which she worked at Svašek Hydraulics during the second part of 2011, includes numerical simulations with FINEL2D.
The Mosonyi award is given out by the Hungarian Hydrological Society for outstanding work in river regulation, flood control, water use, water management and/or hydro-power.
Barbara is currently working at via donau - Austrian Waterway Administration as project manager of NEWADA duo, which is supporting the waterway management authorities along the Danube in achieving a common level of service in waterway management.
